My recap includes the key points from the last Council meeting and my thoughts. You can find the agenda and live stream at: https://www.chambleega.com/city_clerk_s_office/city_council_meetings.php
As always, feel free to ask me any questions.
Note: This was my first meeting as Mayor Pro Tem with Mayor Mock, who was out of town. Due to assuming the Mayor's duties, I didn't have a vote.
Announcements and Presentations
2023 PAC Recap and Update - Tenisha Jones, Public Arts Coordinator, gave a presentation recapping the Public Arts Commission's (PAC) accomplishments in 2023. Last year was the first year the PAC had a budget, and they were able to accomplish a significant amount with those funds. One of the more prominent projects around town was painting the utility boxes around town.
New Business
Alcohol Ordinance Amendment – The proposed amendment went through the 1st read, and the Council deferred to April due to some verbiage in the Ordinance that needs changing.
Staff Action Items
Dresden Park Contract Award – Approved. This is a big deal, and I'm ecstatic to get this project started!
It was in bad shape when Chamblee took over this park from DeKalb. It was a criminal activity hotspot covered in graffiti and litter. However, the City has done a fantastic job of cleaning it up and making it safe for our residents. This investment of almost $13 million into the park, making it the jewel of Chamblee."
The new plans on the City website include a dog park, tennis courts, a mini pitch, a concession/canopy building, terraces, and a playground. You can find more information on the city website: https://www.chambleega.com/news_detail_T2_R93.php
Chamblee-Dunwoody Road Intersection Study/Road Diet – Approved to move forward with Alternative 3 Council.
This project will remove a lane on Chamblee Dunwoody – one lane between New Peachtree Rd and Peachtree Blvd – and install roundabouts at the same area intersections and a multi-use path.
I will always place pedestrians over vehicles, and the road diet/roundabouts will significantly improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow. This work is a win for everyone.
Peachtree Blvd Realignment Project- Approved as presented to Council. The project is a Chamblee Doraville CID-funded project that the City will manage.
A brief description of the project: Peachtree Boulevard Realignment and Gateway consists of the realignment of the intersection of SR141 (Peachtree Boulevard in Chamblee and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Doraville) and N. Shallowford Road, Peachtree Road, and Parsons Drive. SR 141 in the Cities of Chamblee and Doraville, 200 feet south and 200 feet north of the intersection of Peachtree Road and North Shallowford Road.
5300 Peachtree Road Sidewalk and Landscaping Improvements – Approved. This item approved the final plans and cost for the project. The trees in front of 5300 Condos destroyed the sidewalk and created a pedestrian risk. The City removed the trees, and this project will replace the trees and fix the sidewalks.
Chamblee Rail Trail 7-12 Task Order – Approved. The Rail Trail extension continues downtown. This item approved the funds and contract to engineer segments 7-12. This section will continue from Peachtree Rd. and Pierce Drive to the Chamblee/Doraville border.
DDA/City Maintenance Agreement – Approved. Authorized an Intergovernmental Service Agreement (IGA) between the City and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) for property maintenance for a fee.
Mayor's Monarch Pledge Resolution – Approved. The Council approved continuing to be a part of this fun program.
3207 Parkridge Crescent Stream Buffer Variance – Approved with conditions. The resident at this property asked to pipe the creek in their backyard for safety reasons.
Mayor and Council Items
Councilmember Mesa: Kovel Ukraine Book Drive Shipment – Council approved staff to prepare the books for shipping using the SCI line item to purchase shipping materials and return to the March council meeting with shipping quotes and recommendations on funding for shipping costs to Kovel, Ukraine.
