The Locomotive - One Big Thing

Winter Storm Cora

The storm closed many things when it dropped snow on Chamblee, but we worked hard to keep you safe. Below are the measures the City took. The biggest concern at the time was power outages. Mayor Mock had been in contact with GA Power to help escalate the situation. The good news was that it was mostly blown transformers and not downed powerlines. The bad news was widespread outages and limited resources from GA Power.

Police:

  • CID had one detective on site.

  • Patrol units ran as scheduled and came in an hour early at 6 a.m. The city reserved 10 hotel rooms for additional on-call officers.

  • The Neighborhood Response Unit had five officers working on shift and through the weekend.

  • Dispatch operated as normal.

  • Road closures were monitored by PD in partnership with public works, and updates on closures were coordinated with Communications as necessary.

Public Works:

  • Sanitation was suspended on Friday, 1/10. This route was scheduled for pickup on Monday, 1/13.

  • A skeleton crew worked on Friday. Staff was on call as needed, and hotel rooms were reserved for seven employees so they could respond quickly to any issues.

  • Streets were brined starting at 4 a.m. Friday morning, including the following streets:

    • Clairmont Rd. and Clairmont Bridge

    • Chamblee-Tucker Road

    • Chamblee-Dunwoody Road from 141 to the bridge, including the bridge

    • Broad Street

    • American Way

    • Chamblee-Dunwoody Way

    • Pierce Drive

    • Miller Drive

    • Malone Drive

    • McGaw Drive

  • Staff placed salt and sand on the Rail Trail and treated sidewalks in the downtown SSD with brine prior to the storm.

  • City Hall and PD parking lots were brined before the storm event.

City Hall:

  • City Hall was closed on Friday.

  • Non-emergency staff worked from home.

  • Social media, the city website, and the news media were updated about closures and other storm-related updates as needed.

  • No events were scheduled for the weekend.

Thanks to all that helped worked before, during, and after the strorm!
